Political Week 13/11/09

So this week saw Armistice Day and with it a huge outpouring of emotion at the apparently futile sacrifice of our service men and women. We defeated two fascist empires last century who threatened to invade our shores but nowadays our wars are fought on the old ideals of our own empire. Following 9/11 it seemed to me at least that it was necessary to invade Afghanistan as the evidence of Al Queda training camps seemed fulproof and they had to be stopped. The war is over now. We are now an occupying force and no occupation in history as been truly successful. They say that we are attempting to introduce democracy to these people but what right do we have to do that, these are mostly nomadic tribal people who are not backwards for not understanding democracy. We don't force animals to vote in elections to see who will be top dog. A senior security advisor in the US government has said that Al Queda no longer poses any threat to the west from Afghanistan. It's Pakistan we need to be worried about. It's not beyond the realms of possibility for Pakistan to fall under terrorist rule and then there would be a genuine nuclear state with clear motivation for attacking the west. Our forces shouldn't be in Afghanistan, they should be in Pakistan.
